Kasanka Bat Migration
Zambia is home to the largest mammal migration on earth – the Kasanka Bat Migration. Every year between October and December, at least 8 million straw-coloured fruit bats cover the skies of the Kasanka National Park in one of the greatest wildlife spectacles of our times.
The fruit bats come to Kasanka to feast on the various fruits in the forest which include Masuku and mufinsa.
The bats come from the Congo rainforests to eat the fruits which are in abundance in the Kasanka National Park.
In November, all the bats would have arrived in the Kasanka National Park and the sky is visibly filled with bats that fly
and drop seeds of the fruits that they consume.
It is believed that most female bats are either pregnant or feeding their young; the fruits help them with extra energy which is required at that stage.
