Dag Hammarskjold
The Dag Hammarskjold National Monument is situated within the Ndola West Forest Reserve. The monument marks
the site of the plane crash in which Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary General of the United Nations Organization was killed on
18th September 1961 while on a peace negotiation mission in modern day CONGO DRC.
The National Monument site has a library with information on Dag Hammarskjold and it is a must visit for historians. The National
Monument was officially opened on 7th November 1981 by Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda who was president at the time. The site has been
visited by prominent people including the Zambia’s second republican president of Zambia, Dr. Fredrick J.T Chiluba; who laid a
stone in remembrance to mark the 40th Anniversary of the plane crash.
