David Livingstone Memorial
The David Livingstone Memorial site is accessible through the Mansa Road. David Livingstone was the first European to see the
great waterfall of 'Mosi-O-Tunya' (The smoke that thunders), which he renamed Victoria Falls in honour of his Queen.
During his last African expedition, Livingstone suffered from dysentery and was extremely weak, he was carried to Chitambo
Village on 29 April where he died on 1 May, while kneeling in prayer.
Following his death, his followers removed his heart and buried it at the foot of an Mpundu tree. The body was smeared with salt
inside and out and exposed to the sun for fourteen days in order to be preserved, it was then transported to England and buried
there.
